Open knowledge

Credits & Licenses

Mundu exists thanks to the free knowledge movement. Every article, photograph, date and coastline in the app comes from open projects built by millions of volunteers and scientists. This page credits them all.

Wikipedia

CC BY-SA 4.0

All article titles, summaries and encyclopedic text shown in Mundu come from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, and are written by its volunteer contributors.

Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. Each article in the app links directly to its original Wikipedia page, where the full text and the complete list of authors can be found.

Wikidata

CC0 1.0

The structured facts that power Mundu’s exploration — coordinates of places, their categories (castle, volcano, battlefield…), foundation dates and links between languages — come from Wikidata, the free knowledge base.

Wikidata’s data is released under Creative Commons CC0 1.0 (public domain dedication).

Wikimedia Commons

Free licenses

The photographs and image galleries in Mundu are hosted on Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository, and were created by thousands of photographers who chose to share their work.

Each file on Commons carries its own free license (typically Creative Commons or public domain) and attribution. The app links every gallery back to Commons, where the author and exact license of every single image can be consulted.

Natural Earth

Public domain

The globe’s vector geography — coastlines, minor islands and populated places — is derived from Natural Earth, a public-domain map dataset built through a collaboration of volunteer cartographers.

NASA SRTM elevation

Public domain

The 3D mountain relief on the globe is rendered from Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) elevation data, processed by Reto Stockli, NASA Earth Observatory. NASA imagery and data are in the public domain.
